Peter Rabbit is a Dirty Thief and Early Potatoes are for Chumps

Summer is here, and we are getting busy with the Upick and the vegetables. I thought it would be good to give an update on the state of affairs.

To begin with, I’d like to mention that rabbits are not my favourite creature right now. I was really looking forward to some fresh snap peas, but the rabbits got there first. I’m conjuring up memories of a delicious rabbit entrée I enjoyed at Restaurant 62 a couple years ago, to make myself feel a little better. I’d like to have that again, with a side of snap peas.

In other bad news I’m afraid that none of the early Warba potatoes that I planted outside actually grew. Because of our wet spring they rotted in the ground. The good news is I had the foresight to plant a few rows in the greenhouse, and those are looking great (as you can see in the pictures).

For the most part, though, things are growing very well. It looks like we are on track this year for a bumper crop of blueberries and blackberries, the dahlias are all up, and the greenhouse veggies are already starting to fruit. Also, our pumpkins and squash are growing really well.

Rabbits and rotting potatoes aside, things are on track and we’re happy with the results so far!
