November, Movember, What does it all mean?
It seems to give men license to grow facial hair of some kind when they might otherwise remain clean shaven. Ohhhh, and all the variations of facial hair for these men, some sport ‘Duck Dynasty’ type growth where you wonder what might be living in all that fur while others opt for a simple moustache or one of the variations seen below. I have to say, some people suit the stache while others look down-right creepy.
But Movember is not just about growing a moustache for a month or putting some cute ones on your kids for photo ops (guilty). Movember is about raising awareness for men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and depression. I’m going to focus on prostate cancer here, because my father-in-law had prostate cancer and I found some interesting facts on the website http://ca.movember.com. I did not know that:
It is the most common cancer in Canadian men and is the second largest cause of male cancer deaths in Canada
1-7 men will develop prostate cancer and I in 28 will die from it
More men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer annually in Canada
If detected early there is a 95% survival rate
I could tell you more…because there is lots more, but I’ll let you check out the site yourself.
So November…I mean Movember puts a fun twist on this serious issue and raises our awareness of men’s health, which is great because I know I want the men in my life to be around for a very long time.
