To the Gala Girls: thanks for the party!
For several years now Bill and I have attended the Crystal Gala, a local event which raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research. I will never forget my first gala where I felt dreadfully underdressed as women in gowns and updo’s surrounded me. But I have refused to get too caught up in my hair and attire for the evening because I believe that we are there for the cause and not just for a glamorous night out. After all, the less money I spend on my frills, the more we can donate to the Crystal Gala Foundation.
Every year has a theme and every theme is different. I am always wowed and amazed by the atmosphere the Gala Girls create; ranging from the bright lights of Broadway, to an ethnic adventure in a foreign land or simply sparkling with crystals. No matter the theme, it is one swanky affair…especially for a hick like me. This year they celebrated 15 years with a Crystals in Bloom theme. Upon arrival we were greeted by some delicious men in uniform and after walking through the front doors at the Abbotsford Ramada we were pinned with a sparkling jeweled pink ribbon before heading up the stairs to the party.
The foyer was lined with elegantly manufactured cherry blossom trees and the dining hall sparkled with crystals, chandeliers, twinkling candles and a touch of pink. There is so much to fit into the evening and it gets a little overwhelming with the MC, different contests, items being auctioned, various speakers, foundation members making acknowledgements, saying thank yous and announcing successes, hospital representatives speaking to new equipment and accountants talking about financials…phew, yet in between all that we managed great conversations with good friends and a delicious meal before the band began to play and the dance floor opened up.
It’s very impressive what these ladies have accomplished in raising awareness and funds for breast cancer, over $1 million to date. It is a great cause and the girls do a fantastic job throwing a party. Way to go gala girls! And thanks for all the swag. See you next year!
