Pass the peas please
WE SPOTTED English Peas at our onsite market Nature’s Pickin’s this week. These little beauties have a very short growing season, so get in quick before they sell out. Our resident chef Hieke says a bag of English Peas gets snapped up in her household like hot potatoes because of their sweet, refreshing flavour.
Why we love them: aside from their deliciousness, English Peas are packed with folic acid, vitamin K and vitamin C. They are also a rich source of calcium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese.
When to buy them: late spring is usually the time for English Peas but they are available now. Get on it before they’re gone.
How to eat them: on their own, they make a great snack. They are also great raw in a salad – Hieke added ours to roasted beets, steamed asparagus and carrot, drizzled with some olive oil and balsamic glaze. Mmm mmm.
Health note: Because of their high vitamin K content, English Peas should be avoided by those on warfarin.
